The Trend of Crowdfunding Divorces
Everyone is probably familiar now with crowdfunding, the process of a community coming together to fund projects, pay medical bills, help a family member or friend with life expenses. But the popular crowdfunding site Plumfund has surprised everyone with the addition of a new category for divorce. That’s right! The same friends who helped pick items from your wedding registry can now chip in for the divorce.
Plumfund, a branch off of Honeyfund (a fundraising platform for honeymoons) has noticed a need for financial help when the honeymoon is over, and things don’t quite go as planned. Plumfund describes the reason for its new category, “Divorces can involve costly legal fees, setting up new households, even unexpected costs when the divorce is contested.” They aren’t kidding, the average divorce in the United States can cost upwards of $20,000-$30,000 per spouse. That is $60,000 total for the most average divorce. If you have significant assets or a particularly messy divorce, costs can skyrocket. It isn’t uncommon for complicated divorces to hit the six-figures. That is only considering legal fees. Setting up a whole new life is not cheap and can easily completely clean out your savings account.
Divorce Costs out of Control? Choose Mediation!
While divorces can indeed be a pricey expenditure, they don’t have to be. In fact, divorce mediation has the potential to be less than a quarter of the price of a typical divorce. Instead of each party hiring an attorney, the couples meet with one experienced divorce professional that acts as a third-party neutral. You go through all the required divorce documents and create a settlement agreement that is filed with the court and becomes a court order, just like going through the court system for a divorce, without all the unnecessary stress.
